Environmental Health Monitoring

Here at Surrey Diagnostics we are always looking for ways to employ the 3Rs in our health monitoring programmes. Discover a range of options below that can be used instead of traditional SBS programmes, or alternatively, contact us and we’d be more than happy to guide you through the process.

Sentinel-Free Diagnostics

An SBS cage is kept but without the need for sentinels! A filter or floxed swabs are placed in the soiled bedding and routinely shaken to ensure maximum pathogen contact. Find more infomation on the NC3R’s website here:

EAD/AHU Sampling

Any agents shed by the animal will get into the dust extracted from the cage by the Air Handling Unit and collected on the Exhaust Air dust filters. These filters, or a swab sample of the dust, can be sent to us for testing for a variety of agents via PCR. Please click the link below to see our panels.

P3

Our P3 panel is a quick screen for all the common agents that can reliably be found in the faeces. Faeces are collected from selected cages (please do not pool more than 5 to one 1.5ml eppendorf), nucleic acids are purified and tested via PCR for the selected agents. Please click below to see our P3 panel.

Non-invasive samples are taken directly from the colony to give a health overview. These can be fur swabs, oral swabs, slides, faeces or any combination of these. To get the most from this method we highly reccomend talking it through with our team of experts who can guide you through the process.

Non-Invasive Sampling

We provide essential water monitoring services and Aquatics Panels to safeguard animal welfare, covering drinking water, tanks, and aquatic environments. Our meticulous analysis includes qualitative and quantitative microorganism testing to identify contamination sources, ensuring optimal water quality. From routine checks to 24-hour premium services, our expertise benefits various species.
